Temmicks Ground Pangolin - Smutsia temminckii
Ground Pangolins, also called scaly anteaters because of their preferred diet are small, mostly nocturnal, insect eating mammals found across Southern Africa.
They are almost completely covered in a suit of armour made from overlapping, protective scales of Keratin, the same material which forms our finger nails and hair. When threatened, they will roll into a ball to protect their vulnerable belly.
They live in burrows which they dig with their powerful forelegs and have a range of amazing adaptations for finding & breaking into the nests of their favourite food, ants & termites and for getting them out... what are these adaptations?
Sadly Pangolins are among the most critically endangered animals in the world.
