On May the 6th 2025, in South Africa’s Kruger National Park, one of the largest vulture poisoning events in Southern African history took place.
123 Vultures were killed and a further 83 are now recovering thanks to swift intervention by park rangers and Endangered Wildlife Trust officials.
Of the birds killed, the critically endangered white-backed vulture was the worst affected, with 112 found dead at the scene.
Much maligned, this species is vitally important and this is a devastating blow to a species which has lost over 80% of it's population over the last 40 years, many of the deaths due to poisonings like this one.
I've drawn and written about these incredible birds for my upcoming book 'unloved' and in the face of this tragedy wanted to use the artwork I created for that project to do something in the small to help.
SO, I've made a small print edition of 50 prints, they're going to be £350 each and we're going to donate the profit from split between the Endangered Wildlife Trust and Vulpro, so please do consider purchasing a print and sharing this post within your network.
I know that beauty is very much in the eye of the beholder so I have tried to depict this species in the way that I see them, beautiful, intelligent, charismatic full of energy and movement.
The prints are printed with Archival inks and come hand titled, signed and numbered by myself.
Yours in hope
Ben
